Reflection

Research ethics are governed by standard conduct on how researchers perform research according to the ethical principle to protect the rights, dignity, and the welfare of others. Learning technology focus on using technology to support innovations in teaching and learning (Oliver, 2000).

With technology advances, learning has directed many forms of acquiring information which leads children into many issues and distractions in the classroom and outside in the cyberspace. With easy access to multimedia, music, games, and moves been downloaded illegally, academic dishonesty, plagiarism, the ethical issue of respect, electronic communication between teaches, and students and virtual behaviors have tremendously increased that raises concerns. Ethics defines the boundary between right and wrong, educational research is an attempt to gather data from first-hand sources or existing data for new research by direct observation or experience in the field which includes a commitment to participants’ rights and to respect. This sometimes creates issues as research involves vulnerability groups (e.g. Children and persons with learning difficulty, mental health problems, and those who are cognitively impaired) and this raises ethical issues in learning technological research where research could be carried out without their knowledge, deceiving the participants and insisting them to participate.

While enabling education for the displaced, refugees, or asylum seekers the important point to take note is the nationality, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status that will commit to protect their identities and to keep sensitive information with confidentiality. It will be a challenge to represent their voices and how the respondents are selected for the research participation as vulnerability is particularly acute during recruiting to participate and seeking consent. Another would be the research community versus the culture of the participants, as one ethical behavior will be unethical where one cultural norm will be behavior in another culture. Trying to educate these vulnerable people will help to reduce the prevailing issues of childhood abuse, child marriages which deprive the children of their childhood and education.

In some cases, the research criteria include and exclude by agender, age, race/ethnicity, or economic status.  While research is conducted to understand the systems, life processes, and knowledge that leads to predict or prevent future advanced it is the basic ethical right to consider the participants’ consent to the greater good of everyone. My concerns are raised on the approval process regarding the research being conducted internationally (outside the US). Although the requirements criteria will be the same with all ethical standards, will the approval process take time for authorization or does the conduct of research need to be carried out internally?
