My dissertation topic is “Sustainable education to all: concentration on underserved populations.” The research topic includes technology innovation that will use a Raspberry pie system with solar-powered energy and incorporate teaching and learning through Moodle’s learning management system. At the moment, I am confident as I am one step closer to technology innovation. With my idea, Matthew Hilliard’s helped me set up the system during the Christmas break. In the last discussion I had with Dr. Warren before the fall class ended, Dr. Warren suggested I try Moodle. I wanted to have the Raspberry pie system as a digital library while connecting this to the internet to run MOOCs for learners with internet connectivity. I wanted two problems to be solved with one method, and having researched this idea, I thought this was possible with the equipment. I was thrilled to have my technology innovation work completed, even though this was difficult to be achieved as I imagined.

I will concentrate on a qualitative ethnography research study that develops an in-depth understanding of complex social and cultural phenomena within specific settings or groups through direct immersion and interaction. For some time, I have been collecting published academic sources as and when I come across them that reference my topics of interest. However, I may need more than these as the direction of my research has slightly changed from what I wanted last year to the change in technological invention this year. The theoretical aspect is the technology acceptance model (TAM), which explains the technology behavior, a community of inquiry, and constructivism to be the mainstream of my findings. I am glad that the last two classes I follow this semester reflect on my dissertation of building technology LTEC 6260 – creating technology-based learning environments and LTEC 6220 theory of learning technology implementation will help me immensely as I go forth with my dissertation.

My topic of interest originated while I was doing my master’s and was learning about the new technology of instruction. Having been working for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for 15 years and having known about the struggles of the camp population, I came across article 26(1) Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “everyone has the right to education.” While providing technology solutions to the field locations, I was aware there were severe power issues; therefore, I was interested in providing a solar-powered technology solution which drew me to find a solution not only for the camp population but for all the underserved population to present them with a brighter tomorrow. As such, I am positive to see the rainbow after the storm of my dissertation writing.
